Out of this World: Professor Colin Pillinger tells the story behind the mission to the red planet
The Old Hall at Queens’ College Queens’ College is one of Cambridge’s most popular venues for business dining and has for many years been a favourite for organisations from Cambridge and the surrounding business community, as well as overseas.
One such example is the Business & Professional Club, which for the last 14 years has chosen the awe-inspiring Old Hall as the venue for its monthly luncheons.
On 1st December 2005, members and guests of the dining Club where treated to a very special speaker, Professor Colin Pillinger, FRS of the Mars Lander project (pictured here). Professor Pillinger spoke with huge enthusiasm to more than 80 enthralled diners in the Old Hall about Beagle 2, the spaceship named after Charles Darwin’s ship, and its courageous mission to find life on Mars in 2003. Despite the fact that this dream was never realised, Professor Pillinger remains undaunted, revealing his plans for a new voyage to Mars which will use the learning’s from the original attempt to drastically increase the odds of a successful mission in future years.
The Business and Professional Club prides itself on its ability to attract distinguished speakers from around the country and in addition to Professor Pillinger, it has also played host to high profile speakers including Barbara Cassani and Lord Jeffrey Archer.
Founded in the 1950s, the Business & Professional Club is one of the oldest dining clubs in Cambridge. It has over 165 male and female members made up of senior business people from a wide range of industry sectors.
